SS13 is quickly approaching. The department store shoe sales start to disperse. In rolls the pastel hues, long silky dresses, strappy sandals, you get the point. I, have many problems with spring dropping in stores this early. For one, I have a process when hunting my next purchase.

The Baseball Bomber, It’s become quite a sought after piece for spring, summer and even fall fashion. Ironic, because I actually wore a letterman bomber in high school that closely resembled some of the most wanted bomber’s on the runway today.
Although I haven’t even acknowledged the arrival of New York Fashion Week I am very well aware of her presence. I have actually been living on Style.com all week catching hourly updates from all the shows. I’ve been running away from this post because part of me is a little bitter I’m not there. When I saw the Rebecca Minkoff Fall 2013 clips from the runway I decided it was time to stop running.
Fashion and style for the most part is repetitive. Every trend will eventually resurface. Knowing this, when I look to judge a designers preview collection on the runway I look for risks to be taken. I want to see the designer step outside of his or her own personal comfort zone. I feel like we have all seen every silhouette, fabric, color and print in some form or another on the runway before. Judging fall and spring previews by the risk factor is the best way I can differentiate the pieces I have seen over and over again.
Rebecca Minkoff’s Fall 2013 preview blew me away. After reading the article on style.com I learned that her inspiration came from a Neil Armstrong quote: “Don’t tell me the sky’s the limit when there are footprints on the moon”. You can see the relationship to this inspiration in each one of her pieces. There were holographic heels, leather biker jackets that channeled space suits, galaxy printed graphic tees, baggy silk shorts, tom boyish pants, and a canary yellow boxy shift dress, just to name a few. My favorite piece from the runway (along with everyone else) is the black and white tweed coat with a shearling trim collar and accents of the same canary yellow in her other pieces. I think Rebecca Minkoff does an exceptional job every season and she continues to surprise me and grow as a designer. I’m excited to see Spring 2014!
Might I add that she made it possible for fashion show attendees to order pieces directly off the runway from her Fall 2013 collection. As if not attending NYFW wasn’t bad enough for me, this was practically like turning a stiletto in my stomach.
Leather pants, a basic striped tee, denim jacket, strappy black shoes, and statement sunnies, these are all key pieces you should have in your closet.
Where have you been my whole life? You perfect oversized airy ALC trouser pants.
My 3.1 Phillip Lim printed harem pants have some tough competition to the oversized and perfectly structured Gat Rimon top in this post. Aside from a nude colored, almost perfect match to my skin Chloe blouse I got 4 years ago, this ivory top is my favorite classic piece in my wardrobe.
When we grow up there are underwritten rules of how we can portray the little kid buried inside of us. Whether you chose to protect your smart phone in a hot pink bunny cover, use a Hello Kitty soap dispenser, rock bright blue glitter sneakers, or wear a button up with smiling mushrooms and rabbits on it. They are all socially acceptable, 2013 this is one thing I love about you.
The cure to a bad day usually involves, a new purchase, music, food, and wine, something along those lines…. On this particular day I was definitely feeling the pressure with my full time job as a buyer and my side job: blogging.
Why is it so hard to find the perfect denim shirt?! Probably because, denim is usually stiff and not one bit flattering on the top half of our bodies. I’m really reaching for the stars to make this statement sound creative, but there’s no way around it; the Current Elliott button up really is, “The perfect denim shirt”.
I think it’s a good idea for everyone to step outside of their comfort zone and try new styles once in awhile. This outfit is definitely outside my comfort zone…I rarely ever dress super feminine.
